Sensitive Information Does Not Relate To Spy
Allegations Against NDPP
27 October 2003
On 21 October 2003, the office of the Public Protector
indicated that sensitive information relating to top government
officials, private individuals and certain institutions had been
released to the Public Protector by an individual in the Eastern
Cape. At that stage, it appeared that, subject to verification,
the bulk of the matter might best be dealt with by the Hefer
Commission.
After further consultation between the Public Protector and
this individual the following emerged:
- The matter does not relate to the spy allegations against
the National Director of Public Prosecutions and will therefore
not be referred to the Hefer Commission.
- This individual consulted a psychiatrist on various
occasions in the past and claims to be under a great deal of
stress at the moment. The psychiatrist concerned may have
additional information relating to some of the issues, and also
with regard to the state of health of this person.
"The circumstances thus strongly suggest that I access all the
information and/or reports in the psychiatrist's possession
concerning this person. This will enable me to determine how the
matter should be dealt with," said the Public Protector, Mr
Lawrence Mushwana.
On request of this person, the Public Protector undertook to
withold his/her identity and whereabouts for security reasons. He
will thus neither confirm nor deny disclosures made by certain
newspapers in this regard.
