Sensitive Information Released to Public
Protector
21 October 2003
Sensitive information relating to top Government officials,
private individuals and various institutions, has been released to
the Public Protector.
After an individual in the Eastern Cape had approached the
office of the Public Protector for this purpose, a Chief
Investigator was sent to consult with this person.
Further consultation will be taking place once the information
has been checked and scrutinised, as the person concerned has
further information to release and is prepared to divulge this
only to the Public Protector directly.
From the little information received thus far, it would appear,
subject to verification, that the bulk of the matter might best be
dealt with by the Hefer Commission. However, the indications are
that certain aspects may fall within the jurisdiction of the
Public Protector.
Due to the sensitive nature of the allegations, the contents
cannot be divulged at this stage. The office of the Public
Protector will attempt to keep the media updated and is hopeful
that more information should be available within a week.
