Media statement by the Public Protector, Adv M
I Mushwana, in connection with the public response by the
national director of public prosecutions and the former minister
of justice to the submission to parliament of the report on an
investigation by the public protector of a complaint by Deputy
President J Zuma against the national director of public
prosecutions and the national prosecuting authority in
connection with a criminal investigation conducted against him
8 June 2004
The Public Protector is very concerned about the
contents of the joint media statement by the National Director
of Public Prosecutions and the former Minister of Justice made
in response to the above-mentioned report, during the weekend of
29-30 May 2004. He is equally disturbed by the personal remarks
that were publicly made about him by Mr Ngcuka and Dr Maduna.
Adv Mushwana is currently considering the
details of the said statement and remarks in order to take a
responsible decision on how best to deal with it. The public
interest will ultimately inform his decision. The Parliamentary
process of dealing with the recommendations contained in the
report now has to be allowed to take its course, he said.
The media is requested to be patient and not to
insist on further statements in regard to this matter. The
decision of the Public Protector will be announced during the
course of next week.
