Public Protector: Regional Office in Northern
Cape
25 June 2002
The Northern Cape regional office of the Public Protector in Kimberley will be officially opened on Tuesday, 25 June 2002 by the Hon Premier E M Dipico.
In terms of the Constitution, the Public Protector must be accessible to all persons and all communities. "Most obviously, accessibility as required by section 182(4), means physical accessibility", said the Public Protector, Adv Selby Baqwa SC. The establishing of regional offices therefore forms part of the mandate of the Public Protector. The ultimate aim is to have a regional presence in each province, with the exception of Gauteng, where the national office will fulfil this function. Regional offices already exist in the North West, the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape and Mpumalanga.
"This is another significant milestone in the development of the office and I trust that the people of the Northern Cape will make full use of the services that we offer as part of the overall effort to improve good governance in our country," said Adv Baqwa.
