Public Protector in Beirut: Ombudsman for Lebanon

The Public Protector, Adv S A M Baqwa SC is currently attending a conference of Ombudsman from 19 countries across the world, in Beirut, Lebanon. This conference was called by the Lebanese Minister of State for Administrative Reform, with a view to establishing, for the first time ever, an Ombudsmans Office in Lebanon.

Adv Baqwa, who is also Vice-President of the International Ombudsman Institute, will be presenting a paper entitled History, Operations and Lessons in the office of the Public Protector of South Africa.

Commenting on the importance of this event and at the same time referring to certain parallels between Lebanon and South Africa, Adv Baqwa said: Given the ideals encapsulated in the concept of the African Renaissance and NEPAD, it is only appropriate that we give content and substance to these concepts through concrete actions. Good governance is critical to the furtherance of social and economic development. The establishment of an Office of Public Protector in Lebanon, a previously strife torn and war ravaged country is therefore a very positive development.
