AOMA calls on AU to prevent loss of
innocent lives in Libya
Thursday, 29 September 2011
The African Ombudsman and Mediators Association (AOMA) has
urged the African Union (AU) to do everything in its powers
to avoid the loss of innocent lives in the on-going conflict
in Libya. This resolution was taken at the recent
Executive Committee meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
which was attended by among others the Public Protector of
the Republic of South Africa Adv Thuli Madonsela, who also
serves as the secretary of the body. Public Protector
Chief executive officer Themba Mthethwa also attended the
meeting. In its document titled the Addis Ababa
Declaration, the continental watchdog body strongly
condemned the loss of lives in the North African state which
has been ravaged by conflict since early in the year. The
36-member organization, which aims to advance the ideals of
good governance and human rights in Africa by supporting and
protecting the independence and development of ombudsman
institutions in the continent, also resolved to avail its
resources and members to assist the AU and other
multilateral bodies in pursuit of democracy, good governance
and peace in the continent. The meeting further resolved
that AOMA needs to work hard to increase its membership,
recognition and visibility among AU member states through
involvement in African governance and human rights
activities. This is to allow the body to be a pillar of good
governance, human rights protection and the fight against
corruption. Issued by the African Ombudsman and
Mediators Association
