Public Protector addresses older person’s forum AGM                                  (01/09/2010)

Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela will address the Annual General Meeting of the South African Older Persons’ Forum (SAOPF) in Bloemfontein, Free State on Thursday, 02 September 2010.

The SAOPF is a section 21 company, whose role is promote the rights and dignity of older persons, consult and advise government, comment on legislation and policy, raise public awareness and interact with the Minister of Social Development, Parliament and other relevant stakeholders on behalf of members.

The Public Protector regularly receives a number of complaints from older persons. Most of the complaints relate to suspended old age grants due to duplicate identity documents, among other things. [read more]
 
Public Protector commences public consultations on rules                          (01/09/2010)

Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela will soon publish in the Government Gazette rules aimed at expediting the resolution of complaints and ensuring compliance by organs of state guilty of failing the public.

In terms of section 7 (11) of the Public Protector Act 23 of 1994 (PPA), the Public Protector may make rules in respect of matters that have a bearing on investigations provided that such rules are be published in the Government Gazette for public comments and tabled in the National Assembly. Public Protector and UK counterpart conclude two-day interaction, sign MOU                                                                                                                                             (19/08/2010)

Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela and her United Kingdom counterpart, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, Ann Abraham, concluded their two-day engagement yesterday with a round table.

The roundtable was held under the theme: “Ombudsman, making a difference in providing remedial action when the state fails its people: the United Kingdom Parliamentary and Health Services Ombudsman experience.”

Attended by, among others, representatives of the judiciary, the legal sector, academics and ombudsman institutions in the private sector, the roundtable sought to draw valuable lessons from Ms Abraham’s office, which has been in existence for more than 40 years. [read more]  


Report on an investigation into complaints relating to improper awarding of tenders by municipalities in Limpopo and North West                                        
             (16/08/2010)

The Public Protector submitted her Report on an investigation into complaints relating to the improper awarding of tenders by municipalities in the Limpopo and North West Provinces to the Speaker of the National Assembly on 13 August 2010.

The investigation was the result of complaints lodged with the Public Protector by Mr E Roets, the National Chairperson of AfriForum Youth and Mr I Kekana, the Head of Communications in the Limpopo Province of the Congress of the People, which were based on a newspaper report published on 21 February 2010. Public Protector and UK counterpart to hold seminar

Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela and her United Kingdom counterpart, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, Ann Abraham, will hold a national seminar on how ombudsman institutions should redress citizens failed by governments.

The seminar is part of the activities Ms Abraham, who has a history of taking firm remedial action to correct state wrongs, will engage in during her two-day stay in South Africa. [read more]
